Attendance

If your child has to miss school, please notify the office as soon as possible about the absence.  When your child is able to return to school, please send any doctor’s documentation and/or other notes.  The school needs the notes to help determine excused and unexcused absences.  If no documentation is brought to the school, the absence will be considered unexcused.

Cafeteria Charges

All cafeteria charges need to be paid as soon as possible.  Beginning in May, students will not be allowed to charge for meals.

student pick-up

Thank you for not leaving your car if you are in one of the two lanes of traffic and pulling forward in the K – 3 parking lot.  It has helped the traffic flow in the parking lot.

jump rope for heart

On Feb. 29th, 128 students and 10 teachers participated in Jump Rope for Heart here at Tom Bean Elementary.  All together, the kids raised $4796.00.  During their PE time, the kids enjoyed jumping rope, bouncing on large bounce balls, and jumping on pogo sticks.  Payton Clark, Colton Blomstedt and Janna Payne each raised more than $150, which earned them 2 free tickets to Wet and Wild in Arlington and qualified them for a drawing to Walt Disney World in Florida. I had initially set our school goal at $2000, but the kids did an outstanding job of raising money and far exceeded that amount.  I am very pleased with the amount of money the kids raised.  A special thank you to all the kids, parents and The American Heart Association for doing such a great job! COUNSELOR'S CORNER

WOW!  What a fast year this has been!   As summer approaches and as children have more time on their hands, hopefully, we as parents can plan some family activities to stay tuned in to our children.  We must be mindful of where our children are and what they are doing at all times.  We must get acquainted with our children’s friends and their parents.  Plan a trip to the park or a cookout and invite one of those “friends” to get to know them better.  As another school year ends, I want to thank you for sharing your children with us and I hope everyone has a SAFE and WONDERFUL summer.

Emergency/Bad Weather Notices:  Parents may sign up to receive electronic district emergency communications directly to their home computers and/or personal cell phones at www.flashalert.net.  All notices of school delays, closings or early releases will be also be sent to the following news media: Ch. 10 KTEN, Ch. 12 KXII TV, KFYN 1420 AM / KFYZ 98.3 FM, KGVL 1400 AM / KIKT 93.5 FM and KLAK 97.5 FM.

boxtops

Our Box top response was Awesome!  Our goal was 7000 and we collected 8,219!  Thank you for all your help!

We are continuing to collect the box tops through the end of the school year so keep them coming.

Bus students must have a note:  If your student is going to ride a different bus or get off at a different stop, they must have a note signed by the parent and school office.  Please make sure the note states who they are riding with and where they are getting off the bus.  They will need a note each time they ride to a different location.

Eating lunch with your child:  Parents are always welcome to come and eat lunch with your child.  If you are planning to eat lunch, please call the front office at 903-546-6333 by 9:30 to let the cafeteria staff know.  This will allow them to have enough meals prepared for the number of people eating lunch.  You also need to sign-in at the office and sign-out when you leave.

Gold Performance Acknowledgments: Tom Bean Elementary School received five Gold Performance Acknowledgements for performance on the 2006 – 2007 TAKS tests.

·         Commended Performance Math – Acknowledged

·         Commended Performance Writing – Acknowledged

We are very proud of our students and faculty for a job well done!

school board recognizes Elementary Student:

The Tom Bean ISD School Board recognized Hank Peeples, a 2nd grade student, as the Student of the Month.  Hank’s favorite hobbies are dirt bike riding and playing electric guitar.  Hank likes to visit his family’s lake house in Mississippi.  He was introduced to the board by Mrs. Shields.  He selected Mrs. Shields to introduce him because she likes to embarrass him and he really likes her.  Tom Bean Elementary is proud to have a student like Hank Peeples!

May Student of the Month

This is the last month for the Newsletter so I will also recognize the May student of the month.  At the May board meeting the board is scheduled to recognize 1st Grader Faith Norton.  Faith’s favorite hobbies are eating ice cream and having makeovers.  Faith says she loves her family because they let her have ice cream floats.  Faith has selected Mrs. McLain to introduce her because she lets them do fun work.

FitnessGram

A more physically fit kid is a smarter kid or a better student,” said Tal Sanders, TBISD Athletic Director.

All Tom Bean ISD students in grades 3 through 12 will be given the Fitnessgram physical fitness assessment this spring, in accordance with a new state law. Senate Bill 530 requires that the FITNESSGRAM physical fitness assessment be administered to all students in grades 3-12.

FITNESSGRAM is a health-related fitness assessment developed by The Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research and is a research-based criterion referenced test.

FITNESSGRAM tests all students regardless of age, gender, or ability. Students are encouraged to be self-aware of health-related fitness and take responsibility by setting personal fitness goals. When students focus on the process of doing their personal best, a more positive lifelong impact is achieved.

If you have any questions about the FITNESSGRAM Assessment, please contact the campus Physical Education teacher or refer to http://www.FITNESSGRAM .net/texas/.

PE has come a long way,” Sanders said. “We have fabulous PE classes. We’re trying to teach them [kids] sports and activities for a lifetime. We are looking forward to seeing results from the Fitnessgram and helping children lean toward a healthy lifestyle.”

Frequently Asked Questions

About FITNESSGRAM

1. Why is fitness testing important to me?

The FITNESSGRAM physical fitness assessment is based not on athletic ability, but on good health. No matter what your career path, you will live a happier, more productive life if you are healthy--and physical fitness is vital to overall health. FITNESSGRAM provides accurate and reliable information about your physical condition and how it can be improved.

2. Can I “fail” the FITNESSGRAM test?

No. FITNESSGRAM is a tool to help you determine your fitness needs and guides you in planning a personalized physical activity program. The test will not affect your grades in any way.

3. Will my scores be posted or be made public?

No.

4. Will my results be compared to other students?

No. FITNESSGRAM uses Healthy Fitness Zones (HFZ) to determine your overall physical fitness. HFZs are not based on class averages or any other peer comparisons. The standards are set specifically for boys and girls of different ages using the best available research. If your score falls within the HFZ, it means you have achieved the recommended level of fitness for your age. If your score falls below the HFZ, you should engage in activities that will help you improve.

5. What are the FITNESSGRAM Test items?

There are six test items:

• Either the Mile Run, PACER (20 meter shuttle runs) or the Walk Test (measures aerobic capacity)

• Push-ups (measures upper body muscular strength/endurance)

• Curl-ups (measures abdominal muscular strength/endurance)

• Either the Back Saver Sit and Reach or Shoulder Stretch (measures flexibility)

• Trunk Lift (measures trunk extensor strength and flexibility)

• Body Mass Index (measures body composition: appropriateness of weight relative to height)

6. What can I do to prepare for the fitness test?

• Actively play or move at least 60 minutes at least five days during the week. Walk, jog, play tennis, play racquetball, or participate in any physical activity you enjoy.

• Do strength training activities such as sit-ups, push-ups, modified push-ups or climbing activities 2-3 days each week. Begin doing as many repetitions as possible and try to increase repetitions gradually.

• Eat a healthy diet by including more fruits and vegetables and reducing fats and sugars.

• Ask a physical education teacher or coach on your campus for specific tips on ways you can prepare not only for the FITNESSGRAM test, but for a lifetime of good overall health.
